Couple things here...It would really be nice to hear Tony Levin do some more experimental (or at least left-field) work. He's
got such a great sound and technique. I went to the Gabriel show a couple weeks ago and was very impressed. I would have like
to hear more from the first three albums (what I refer to as "the Jerry Marotta years"), but I also understand that most
people were not there to hear that stuff and all of that was 20 years ago anyway. That said, I really like "UP" and was
surprised by how electronic it is.
Oh, and something that's been lingering as I've watched people recommend particular King Crimson albums: There are a few
compilations that do varied jobs of providing an overview of the various KC periods. Some people like old stuff, some like
new, you know. "The Concise King Crimson" is a good place to start, or if you are confident you can go for the 4CD "Frame By
Frame". For those merely tracing the genealogy of Foreigner, "Young Person's Guide To King Crimson" is a single disc
compilation focusing on their earlier albums (with some pre-KC Fripp tracks, to boot). With such variety and age, it just
seems a bit of a shot-in-the-dark to try and recommend particular albums to a newbie when for the price of a few (or one) of
those they could get a taste of each period. For the album-recommendation camp, though, I'd just say "Discipline" and "Lark's
Tongues In Aspic" to cover the major periods.
