i've never known amon tobin to paly 'live' he always dj's. i imagine it would be impossible for him to re-inact his music as theres so many samples taken from all over the place going off all over the palce. at the big chill a few years back he dj'ed wasn't anything special. his albums on the other hand are amazing and some of my fav jazzy drill n bass music i've heard, listning to permutations i'd say he out does everyone in the same genre. ----- Original Message ----- From: "Kewu" <kewu@telus.net> To: <idm@hyperreal.org> Sent: Monday, November 25, 2002 11:41 PM Subject: [idm] Amon Tobin What happened to Amon Tobin? I used to listen to his tracks and enjoy the jazzy/arabic/dnb fusion he has managed to pull off so well. However, just recently, I saw him perform live and all of my opinions of him changed. The show (at the Commodore Theatre in Vancouver, BC) opened with Bonobo doing a decent performance of some of his tracks. Didn't sound like anything special or unique but he pulled it off nicely. Followed by him was Prefuse, and let me tell you he absolutely ROCKED it. Using his MPC to punch out beats live to some of (imo) his best tracks, doing live tweaks, sequencing, etc, he kept me well entertained and hyped for the entire set. I was expecting the same from Amon Tobin. This is what I was made to expect when I saw "Amon Tobin LIVE" on the flyer. I can't even tell you how dissappointed me and my compadred were. First of all, when Amon came on, they turned the system up around 15-20DB so that even in the VERY back of the enormous ballroom it was uncomfortably loud. Second of all, he wasn't really doing anything more live than any dj does when mixing a set. He had records with time code mixing tracks on his laptop (or at least he was doing his best at mixing). Last, but not least, and this is the part that made me walk out after 15 minutes..... HE WASN'T EVEN PLAYING ANY OF HIS OWN TRACKS!!! WTF? Two of the five tracks I stayed to hear were squarepusher tracks that have come out in the last year. I mean, sure, it was cool to hear a couple of Squarepusher tracks on a nice system, but please! That's just ridiculous! After myself and a couple of friends rushed to the front of the stage to yell at him, telling him to play his own tracks, he finally mixed one in. Unfortanately, by that point we were so disillusioned and deaf that we just opted to leave. Please let me know what you think of this..... I know this probably happens more that I realise with some of the other bigname artists, but at least put "dj Amon tobin" or something like that on the flyer. If I go to a live show, I don't want to watch some dude play other people's vinyl. Bottom line.... all respect lost for Amon Tobin, but still worth the 30 bucks to see Prefuse. __________________________________________________ Do You Yahoo!?
