IDM started as a name for "intelligent techno," like early Autechre and
Aphex Twin.

Techno has meant this since the 80s. It started to be used as a blanket
term in the early 90s by outsiders but that has somewhat fallen off.

I don't think Venetian Snares would ever call himself IDM. Drug and
bass and breakcore are the names I've heard him use.
