i don't think that i quite understood deadend
synthetic
or his comments regarding detroit techno and black
people and how that statement sounded a bit racist. i
myself don't care for detroit techno... i don't
remember who it was but someone was saying that it
might sound dated to people who didn't grow up with
it... i was merely a nestling in its heyday and so
find myself wanting more to happen in the song... but
then i am no terry riley fan either... there's very
little repetitive mustic i do like other than some
housey stuff.
BUUUUUT... i don't think you can blame him for what
he listened to... just because he hasn't been "WITH
IT"
for all that long doesn't make his tastes any less
valid... to stigmatize people who liked the smashing
pumpkins or nine inch nails or whatever is a form of
prejudice... those bands were on mtv and they
presented
the only image of something different from the
mainstream (in imagery and attitude) to kids who
didn't
have any other way to learn about other forms of music
than watching 120 minutes. beyond that, the same
could
be said for anybody and whatever music they like...
i had a girlfriend once who called the music that i
listened to artfag music, said in a somewhat
affectionate fashion, and she listened to pop crap...
but it didn't prevent us from relating... because she
enjoyed some of that music in the same way that i
enjoyed some of my music... the actual music itself
is usually neither here nor there, it's the passion
that matters.
gregory
fuck snobbery.
