Minidiscs, definitely. The best things DAT are for is high quality studio
recording, not field recording. Sure, you can use them for that, but it's
sort of a waste as quality is dependent entirely on the microphone in field
recordings.
I use a minidisc recorder for field recordings and have never thought "man,
I should get a more expensive unit so I can do this exact same thing with
identical results." Sometimes I've thought about buying a better
microphone, though :)
You'll have to get an external mic, but, for example, I use a Sony stereo
mic, ECM-MS907, that's small and has worked great for me.
Plus, minidisc is smaller and last longer on batteries. And with fewer
moving parts. For cheaper.
