whatup idm-l,
things have been kind of quiet lately so I just wanted to step in and
proclaim the greatness of the recently released Casino vs. Japan album,
Whole Numbers Plays the Basics. To quote a poorly translated Daewoo
car stereo instruction manual, "its better than best ever!". Go Hawaii
was rad and all, but sometimes it just didn't do quite enough for me.
Like on the first track, I was all "Ok... this is cool... you've got
that little melody and its kind of badass because the drums are all
distorted, but what's going on here? Could this not be the same loop
over and over again for 6 minutes?" Anyway, my issues have been
totally resolved on Whole Numbers. There is a more evolved sense of
dynamics going on here. There is this aptly titled song called
"Aquarium" and its basically my favorite track on the album. But the
whole album is filled with these really spacious sounds, echo-y and and
warbly synthesizers that just transport you somewhere else (which is
really nice for when you're sitting in an office like I am right now).
So put that in your pipe and smoke it folks. Cheers to Casino vs.
Japan. You done good, son.
Also, I picked up RES magazine this weekend. I've seen it a couple
times before and it seems pretty cool even if there is a bit too much
for me on stuff like which DV camera has better progressive scan or
someshit. Anyway, this new issue has a feature article on none other
than Chris Cunningham. Very good interview that skims the surface on
such topics as Cunningham's upcoming DVD for Warp (that includes things
from Aphex and Tom J and others), the
still-in-limbo-but-will-probably-never-be-made Neuromancer project, in
addition to a few words about Cunningham's progress on adapting A
Scanner Darkly (one of my all time favorite Philip K. Dick books) for
film. Also included is a piece by piece commentary on most of the
videos and things he's ever worked on. There is some other IDM
relevant material scattered throughout the magazine but I don't feel
like going there right now. Point is, if you are as nerdy about
Cunningham as myself and the editors of RES, you should probably get
down on this shit.
Finally, my favorite IDM band, Melt Banana is touring the US! I'm
seeing them tomorrow! Oh boy! You should see them when they come to
