for serious dudes. here is the story. I didn't know much about Dalek except for the fact that their new album was out in Mike Patton's Ipecac label (which more often than not means your ass should pay attention), but they were opening up for this DJ Spooky/Ming + F.S. show in August. Now... the DJ Spooky thing... that guy kind of bugs me, but I used to really like him in 1996 when I was first discovering this electronic music stuff so I felt like giving him another shot. Anyway, for reasons unimportant to the story, I was late to the show and managed to catch the last 15-20 minutes of the Dalek set while burning a spliff. They closed their set with what I would later find out is the last song on their album, Classical Homicide and if I hadn't been sitting down already, it would have knocked my ass to the floor. The album version is good, but it really can't do justice to the live version I saw.
Which brings me to a point I was going to make. My impression of Dalek is that they are first and foremost a live band, so you should really get out and see them. The MC is pretty damn good. The guy behind the mixer and laptop isn't the most captivating to watch, but jesus... that DJ is amazing! Not only does he perform really crazy melodic scratching solos, but he also does this weird shit you've never seen before making crazy noises with his turntable by blowing on/sucking on the goddamn needle. I've since caught them on their current tour with Bad Wizard (rude, loud, stoner-ish rock n' roll) and The Realistics (some new wave band/fashion show I really didn't care for). The night I went, the MC had come down with pneumonia, so it was up to the other 2 guys to save the day with an impromptu instrumental set. Did they succeed? Yes, IDM-list, they certainly did. Let's all pray that the shit they did that night makes it onto a recording sometime in the near future.
A word on their steelo: techno animal-style distorted beats, some ethnic instrument samples here and there, huge sub-bass, and a big layer of musique concrete noise all over it. The lyrics transcend the indie hip hop lyrics we're used to hearing from the anticon camp. I also bought their new EP with Kid 606 and its pretty hot as well. In short, I like Dalek a lot and maybe you should find out if you do too.
