A co-worker at Best Buy told me the first Enigma album (MCMXC a.d.) was good
"thrusting" music, and by god, he was right. I could not stop listening to the
album. This was in early 1996. I kept searching for music that sounded like
that album -- roughly dance music with cool, atmospheric melodies. But I
struck out with shit like Deep Forest.
Later, in January 1997, I was at a local record shop, and they were playing "I
Care Because You Do." I thought, "Hmm, this sort of sounds like Enigma [which
I know now it really doesn't]; maybe this is what I've been looking for!" So I
bought it a few days later. After that, I got into The Orb (mainly a mistake)
and of course Ae, BoC, etc.
So it was basically the luck of hearing Aphex in a record shop. Needless to
say, I feel fortunate to have been in the right place at the right time.
