I think 'RUOK?' won't convince anyone who thinks MBM is in a rut to
think otherwise.
But I really think that even if there's a formula to what he does, it's his
formula and the new CD refines and deepens it. Every track is
fractally detailed with hundreds of little bits of sound design that appear
only once. Even though he throws more at a track than a lot of producers
might use for a whole album, there is still space in the music.
The production values on it are amazing, as well. The bass is deep and wide.
The modular synth sounds are better recorded and mixed than I've ever heard
before. It's the first record I've heard that approaches the sound I've heard
when I patch up a Putney or Serge modular and listen to it direct
through good speakers. And the beats are so big they make Big Beat sound
like My First Sony.
If you're into the whole broken-beat thing going on now, there are several
tracks that would absolutely make a DJ set on this record. But keep in
mind that he was doing this sort of thing years ago, and the broken beat
guys are just now catching on.
