It's been a long time since I posted a review, so appropriately here's a review of an artist who's also been quiet for some time... Eon - Sum of Parts (Long Haul) Sum of Parts is the return of "veteran" (now I'm making myself feel old!) Ian Loveday aka Eon aka Minimal Man aka Tan Ru, sometime collaborator of J. Saul Kane of Depth Charge, Baby Ford and Mark Moore from S'Express. His first release, Light Colour Sound was something of a hit in the emerging acid-house scene, but to my mind his most memorable release is Spice from the 1992 album Void Dweller, with its "he who controls.." sample of David Lynch's Dune. Sum of Parts is the first Eon release in some time, and having inspired me to listen to Void Dweller again for the first time in years I find it's no real departure from the original Eon sound, but that's something I'm actually very glad of. Sum of Parts is rather excellent electro/techno with a distinctive sound of it's own which makes me a bit leery of shoehorning it into a category like that, featuring plenty of Eon's distinctive sci-fi samples (which always fit wonderfully with the atmosphere of the music), gorgeous kinesthetic bass sounds all through, and a judicious sprinkling of lovely spine-tingling analog noises. It's great party music, very danceable in a stompey sort of way and very nostalgic for someone like me who remembers Eon from way back. Even if you haven't heard it before (in fact especially) and particularly for those who are into to the current electro revival, this release comes highly recommended.
