You're half-right.
When you are a list admin and you want to "invite" someone to join your
mailing list, you can either send them an invitation that they have to
reply to in order to be subscribed, or you can subscribe them directly.
Yahoogroups strongly recommends the former, but provides the latter so you
can do stuff like move mailing lists over easily from your personal address
book or other mailing list services.
On the regular user side - you can choose whether or not you will allow the
second method (direct subscription) to be applied to any email addys that
you have registered with Yahoogroups. But there is no way to completely
stop list admins from inviting you to join their group using the first method.
