DJ SHadow - The Private Press (Island).
Right - I'm going to stick my neck out and say
I Like This !
Hmmm, I approached this with some caution, seeing Endtroducing is
sooooo highly acclaimed, etc. etc. and since it's been a 5-year wait
for a new album, we all knew it was improssible to re-invent the
wheel for a second time.
I downloaded a promo MP3 about 2 months ago (Monosyllabic) and was
pretty disappointed; but rest assured, it's not indicative of the
rest of the album, which far surpassed my expectations.
I didn't want to like it. All too many highly hyped albums have not
lived up to my hopes, when I heard them after reading gushing reviews
I only found them to be whispy and insignificant and somehow not
satisfying listens (no, I don't want to name any here, we all know
that our relationships to music are personal and I wouldn't want to
diss anybody's favourites!)
But The Private Press is not just pretty candyfloss; it's got meat
and bones. I have to say that it's a solid, substantial body of
work, lovingly crafted and cobbled together by an expert.
Okay, that's after my initial listen. Maybe my female mind will
change... but I think it will only get better
