Man's Belated Discovery Of 'Kitsch Humor' Dismays Internet Mailing List
Subscribers
INTERNET--On an internet email list dedicated to "Intelligent Dance
Music", subscribers were first amused, and then aggravated, at a slew of
off-topic messages by a few members who loudly proclaimed their love for
rock music from the early 1980s such as Foreigner, Def Leppard, and
Journey. "At first we weren't sure whether the individuals were serious
or not," One member recalls, "I mean, it seemed like such an old played
out joke to me. 'Oh, ELO rawks!', that sort of thing. Surely this was
something new, and not just another 'look at me, I listen to sucky music'
gag. I mean me and my friends were into that joke when I first discovered
I could download Bananarama and Falco songs from Napster."
Soon, however, the messages gave away the posters' true intent, as more
astute members began to notice a certain ignorance on the part of the
posters. "One guy described Lou Gramm [lead singer of Foreigner] as 'that
guy'! At that point I knew he was just trying to be ironic."
After a few low-key 'Cease and Desist' messages, the conversation went
back to the normal topics, such as the pros and cons of live laptop
performances and whether or not Boards of Canada are gay.
