the difference between someone like bit meddler cutting apart christina
aguilera is that he gets the joke. he's making a statement that is more
humorous than entrepreneurial. the songs are recycled as equal parts
nostalgia and cheekiness. Someone like Puff Daddy seems to be "borrowing"
licks and hooks because he doesn't have much of an idea how to make his own.
You get into more murky waters when someone like Kid606 releases his
"reworkings" of Missy Elliott without crediting her for the track, when in
fact the Missy tracks stand up on their own as great production and
innovative stuff. So I guess it's a matter of determining where it stops
being well-humored "appropriation" or homage and starts becoming blatant
rip-offs?
Agreed though that the Force Inc. new wave is pretty hot. Akufen will most
definitely blow up big-time when his CD drops in May. I'm also looking
forward to the Benjamin Wild disc coming out in the next week or 2. I think
also the Bpitch Control label (Berlin) will start to get more attention as
its records get better and better each time.
A couple other artists that will probably be getting more attention are
Rechenzentrum who have already released 2 excellent discs on the Kitty-Yo
label (as well as some 12" on Shitkatapult). Also, Twine, who have a CD on
Bip-Hop due any day now and another on Hefty sometime this year... they've
come a long way from their early semi-drum&bass, IDM-tinged days....
"Circulation" on Komplott was just the start of their newer sound, so be on
the lookout. Actually Komplott in general has released some other stellar
records, by Komp (aka A.Tilliander) and Figurera.
Speaking of nostalgia, I can't help but enjoy a lot of the new
wave-electro-italo revival stuff that's currently en vogue... Gigolo, Creme,
Bunker, Italic... Antonelli Electr's "Me, the disco machine" and the new
Felix da Housecat album are both in heavy rotation round these parts. And
Miss Kitten and the Hacker nearly blew the roof off Zentra here in Chicago
in January ("Motherfuckers are so nice...").
