living in san diego, a mere 15 minutes from tijuana, i just have
to say that you've got the nortec collective all wrong. forget what the
media tells you.. DON'T BELIEVE THE HYPE. the nortec collective is simply
a bunch of guys making electronic music that just happens to be influenced
by the music that surrounds them in their environment. they are not some
"culture schooling gimick" and they don't give a fuck about sounding
"ethnic" because to them, that sound is not "ethnic" at all (in the
white-middle-class-american sense of the term). it's just what their
parents were listening to in the house while they were out playing cops
and robbers in the back yard. in fact, the majority of them hate nortena
music, just as most kids hate their parents' music. but instead of
whining about it they decided to hijack it and make it into their own...
perhaps we should start to criticize boards of canada for trying
to push "ethnic 70s/80s canadian public broadcasting music" on us...
what nortec has done for tijuana as a city and a culture is more
than spectacular, and they should be respected for that, if not for the
music itself.
