telefon tel aviv was also at the top of my list for 2001. the entire "easy-listening/adult-contemporary" comparison doesn't really make much sense to me, considering so many posts on this list in the past have complained about how unlistenable autechre's "confield" album is or how jamie lidell and datach'i are just noisy garbage. the irony is that it seems like so many list contributors hold boards of canada on a pedastal alongside the morr label, ulrich schnauss, arovane's "tides," hermann & kleine, etc.... and these are all equally accessible in my opinion. if the only thing that sets aside telefon tel aviv from the rest of these is the use of more electroacoustic instruments (i.e. guitar, rhodes organ, bass guitar, etc), it's hardly a logical train of thought. for example, i found the telefon album to be significantly more exciting than any of the new radiohead work (in fact, this sounds perhaps like what radiohead wished they were technically capable of, if they only knew how to use their software better). perhaps if telefon added some nonsensical repetitive vocal phrases on top it would be considered breakthrough and avant garde, who knows? don't get me wrong, i actually really like the new radiohead stuff too, but i'm just trying to make a point, and digressing from it at that ;-) i suppose if it's sheer abrasiveness you're going for, telefon would hardly be my recommendation, although i find their reaktor-sequences to have more energy and grit than some of the melodic downtempo coming out of the city centre and morr labels. i don't usually contribute to these impossible threads, but having seen so many arguments over how autechre is unlistenable past "tri repetae", it seems contradictory to slag this perfectly good album based on how accessible it is from a melodic perspective... ok, i think that's more than my 2 cents worth. bye :-)
