Not to get too geeked out on this, but I got pretty close to the setup and I'm almost certain they had a breakout box, something like MOTU with firewire or usb, because of the small rackmount case they had along with their PowerBook. They were definitely using the mixer a lot to tweak everything, so I assume they were just sequencing and mixing sources and adjusting effects. Pretty sure but not positive, that's certainly one way of doing it. My recommendation is to find _your_ way of generating and manipulating sound. One way is to lay down many predetermined tracks using multitrack software. You can also use Max/MSP, Reaktor, SoundHack or similar and create your own sound device for messing with the sounds and sequences. Other techniques mentioned on this newsgroup have been no-input, circuit-bending, misc. strange mic-strangling techniques, all sorts of stuff. Autechre definitely uses modular synths and Max/MSP. And on and on....definitely check out the IDM making list, as EggyToast suggested. ___________________________ Christopher Sorg Multimedia Artist/Instructor http://www.enteract.com/~csorg csorg@enteract.com --- Outgoing mail is certified Virus Free.
