Here's a review I wrote back when it came out. It still stands up today - I'd recommend checking it out. Faultline Closer Colder (Leaf) Every once in a while, a record comes along that seems to perfectly sum up everything that's right about a particular type of music at that moment, as well as offering a glimpse of where the genre might be headed. Closer Colder is one of those records. Following on a back-catalogue of a mere two EPs, this debut album from David Kosten's Faultline project is an outstanding and accomplished hybrid of dub-heavy beats, distorted electronic rhythms, ethereal voices, found sounds, and unique live instrumentation including xylophone, trumpet, strings and more. Every track deserves time in the spotlight, but in the interest of space, I'll try to focus on a few highlights, like the title track that sounds like This Mortal Coil as remixed by Mick Harris and directed by David Lynch (it features a nice vocal snippet of Dennis Hopper from Blue Velvet); or the juxtaposition of quirky melody and perky beats with death threats left on Kosten's answering machine by a vocalist he rejected on the track "Control"; or the floating ambience of the untitled hidden track that closes the set; or - ah, hell, they're all so good, just get the damn thing!
