I've noticed this too, though I don't think it's a new phenomenon. Music critics love dropping these names and others, because it makes them look trendy and credible, and defuses criticism that they never like anything, or that what they like is just rehashing old stuff. I'm sure it became very hip to like Stravinsky after riots broke out at his performances. I wax and wane on music criticism...for a while I enjoy reading particular reviews and then later I get bored with the pretientiousness of it all. I enjoy reading Wire at the moment because the writers don't seem too worried about what the readers think and aren't forced into stupid rating schemes.
