I am reminded that a lot of detroit techno, which IDMists also tend to name-drop and like, was inspired by cars, driving, and streets. Yet when I decided to push the limits of offtopicness by starting a discussion of cars, it was bitched about as too OT, even for some of OT's biggest supporters... but now hip-hop, which I'm pretty sure probably has its own mailing lists, has been stuffing my mailbox for days with no end in sight. KC, of KC & the Sunshine Band, famous disco act, sampled by rappers, was white, yet his whole band was black. I'm not sure if he was straight or gay. And the happenings in the alleyways beneath his window may or may not have inspired his music and lyricwriting. Also, some people who make IDM music may listen to and be influenced by KC and the Sunshine Band. Was that useless enough for you? Some IDM acts have tried to branch off into making hip-hop, and it has largely gone unnoticed, possibly because it sucks. Atom Heart did and album with a Latin rapper, as I recall dealing largely with the topic of Putas & a bit of Chingado. I don't remember anyone seeming remotely interested at the time. That would be on-topic, though it's apparently a little much to ask, and I don't blame anybody for not wanting to discuss such things, whether out of ignorance or politeness. But now hip-hop (mostly MAJOR LABEL hip-hop at that) has been stuffing my mailbox for days. At least I would expect a few of the purists to be jumping on the OT buzzer by now, since they're so quick to drop a smarmy remark or two any other time something that has nothing to do with the music at hand starts ballooning out of control. But I guess I'm in the minority. My point was and is, if you're going to bitch about shit being OT, don't be arbitrary. It's only fair.
