I caught the concert in NYC. I too find the idea of a live drummer playing
jungle style breaks to be cheesy at best - supremely wack at worst. I
probably won't listen to the album but the live show was fun if you take it
for what it is - jazz rock fusion with serious crossover appeal to fans of
live jammy festival type music. Jazzy enough that there was handclapping
after each solo. It was most high energy party funk - stuff like Cooper's
World was extremely sick. Some of the tunes were unfamiliar and it reminded
me of my basic issue w/Squarepusher - he's not great at writing melodies
and has seemingly gotten worse. But yeah good show. Helmets were dumb but I
appreciated I didn't have to watch dudes rock out.
