the newer version of bearshare has the option to not install these
things. keep in mind that these programs are made by a single dude or a
couple dudes, who have soaring bandwidth costs (hundreds of GBs a month)
that they have to pay for out of their own pockets. hundreds of thousands
of people expect free software, but they don't realize the costs it takes
to produce/provide it. then their panties get all up in a bunch when they
are asked to compromise something in return.
