well everybody......just got back from an autechre weekend in NY.
the shows were really nice. rob hall was dj'ing lots of electro/808 stuff.
russell haswell played a couple of sets of stuff that was all over the place. from acid to
jungle to pure noise to death metal. i dont think many enjoyed him though.
autechre played very similar material on both nites.
fierce pounding messed up beats with textural synth stuff on top.
no traces of melody at all. pretty intense and persistent stuff. not like confield at all.
both nights they played for about an hour and a half which was about four 20 minute pieces.
my only problem with their sets is that there was very little variation. same drum/percussion
sounds on every track. same kind of synth stuff on every track. no dynamic range. so in a way
the music felt very static with very subtle changes.
it seemed as though one of the guys was doing all of the drum stuff and the other was doing
all of the synth stuff. not much of a set up. 2 titanium powerbooks, a nord modular maybe??,
another synth or drum synth of some sort, and a peavey midi fader box.
regardless, the shows were nice.
prepare to be thumped.
later,
greg davis
