You say you have a PC? MAX/MSP only runs on a Macintosh but there's a PC
version called PD. I would *highly* recommend the MAX route if you have
programming experience. MAX/MSP really can do everything, I'm serious. If
you've ever used a language called Smalltalk, MAX is basically a graphical
version of that.
I'm in the process of writing a MAX app that's basically an MPC 2000. In the
process I've discovered ways of writing a 64 step sequencer, a looping
sampler, an elaborate VST plugin matrix, a MIDI beat clock to sync external
devices and a MIDI sequencer. In addition MAX has great GUI control and can
use external things like the computer keyboard, mouse, wacom tablet and MIDI
controllers to control it. If you subscribe to the IDM making list, I'm
posting a beta version there tonight or tomorrow.
