I dunno.... I think someone like pthalo makes a good argument for a jazz ethos with an idm aesthetic. I see his stuff as not being too different from say... a milford graves record (and thats not that I see too many fans of one neccesarilly embracing the other).

for the most part I agree with this.... for a lot of "electronica" (and post-rock folks like tortoise, et al) I think the connection with jazz can be purely cosmetic. Then again you have tracks like As One's "amalia's mode" on (Planetary Folklore). He borrows the aesthetic and makes something that I think feels kinda authentic as "jazz". I'll agree that its usually the exception, not the rule. I think it's funny you mention Amon Tobin... his stuff is too premeditated/calculated to feel like "jazz" but at the same time who cares... when you attain that level of beat science it just doesnt matter anymore. _________________________________________________________________ Get your FREE download of MSN Explorer at http://explorer.msn.com --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
