that is a most excellent question.
let's not start with "how" but
*"when"*
Because it sounds seem like he started moving in a dangerous but, for a
while, fruitful direction before the electro house/pre-EDM vibe overtook .
Like, I actually thought We Never Sleep was pretty good, creative and gutsy
but a step away from breakcore into more danceable, DJable stuff. take this
track for example:

Interesting, successful stuff to my ears, but I would understand someone's
misgivings. Only a year later we get this:

Very wack party rocking bullshit. I imagine the opportunities to DJ within
the trifecta of electro house/bassline/dubstep that blogs were pushing at
this time was hard to turn down. Of course that doesn't explain this:

One of the most puzzling pieces of music to emerge from the US underground.
For all that can be said about it, you gotta hand it to him for taking a
chance on...whatever it is. His Fabric mix that came after this has "Rock
Around the Clock" on it. Strange stuff man.
I suppose my point is he had been edging towards a poppier sound for some
time before he took one of the most impressive left turns of an electronic
music producer ever.
Discuss.
