I love that little ditty, and I seriously need to
track down that NWA tune. Nevertheless, people were
asking for specific examples of DSP fuckery for
fuckery's sake, and this little CD is a perfect
example. The godawful Kid606 opener sets the tone
for the whole CD. How long did it take him to
produce that track? Like, 3 minutes maybe? Just
random DSP at random times with no coherence or
musicality, it's like a little kid trying out all
the sound effects on his new keyboard, isn't this
cool, press this thing here, do that there, dude,
that's some fucked up shit man! You totally rock!
Oh wait, what am I talking about? Oh yeah. I do
enjoy it, but my point is just--and I mean this in
the nicest possible way--this is kind of thing the
anti-overglitchiness crowd were railing against.
But it's not supposed to be some kind of beautiful
musical masterpiece, and I understand this. It's
supposed to be what it is. And for that it
succeeds. Different strokes and all that. After
all, we can't all be B12. And it would be terribly
confusing if we all were B12. Let's divide it up:
You guys be B12, and we'll be, um, LFO. L-F-O!
Okay, shirts and skins. No wait, I got dibs on
Scooter. Are you ready... "Hey, can I be FUSE,
man?" No. Shut up. Actually, we prefer to refer
to it as "postmodern collage." How bout gyp hop?
Back to Ahw'-tehk-err. No, I didn't mean it like
that. I gotta have some novelty items, but when it
comes down to the desert island, shove aside for
the Pet Shop Boys, thankyouverymuch. My
comprehension of your genre is so limited I
shouldn't even bring it up. We can all band
together, holding hands, making fun of goa trance
...just like old times. Novelty is all right, but
there is such a thing as "overexposure" to the
Shaggs. Be careful.
