okay, but why? in turn, i will ask, "why does you want quad, penta, sexta repetae?" autechre could have copied themselves over and again and easily ensured their fan-base and livelihood. is that what you folks are after? there is something to be said for artists who decide to keep challenging themselves -- and the listener, at the risk of alienating him/her -- after reaching a level of critical success. suakrates says it best: "i'll keep my fans forever learners..." the baseball players that hit homeruns also get struck out occasionally, but you remember their names and it's fun to watch them play. let autechre worry about autechre... in turn, i will ask the same question i asked months ago: "why are a majority of 'musicians' today making their living on the gimmick of a particular type of sound?" and, yes, i am talking about the "DSP-fuckery" cadre of musicians -- you know who you are -- who sell stylistic technique under the guise of creative substance. to me, what it boils down to are a dearth of creative sense and a glut of plug-ins that make pretty much any laptop owner under 20 an "artist" and a media darling. all that i can do as a listener is wait for the dross to settle.
