hey all, Was reading the December 2000 Jockey Slut (yeh, i know, way outta date), and it's got a Boards Of Canada cover story, complete with all-too-rare interview, so figured you ppl might want to hear the highlights. I still consider BoC one of the great 'idm' artists of the past few years, certainly, and it's nice to see their famously reclusive selves actually interviewed :) Mike says "where some people will work on a track solidly for four days, we'll spend that long just on a hi-hat sound" ("it'd be funny if it wasn't true", chuckles Marcus.) They live in a commune in the Scottish hills, or at least, it was a commune - "people had kids, or went off travelling. It's down to a hardcore of four or five now." They say they've been approached to produce "artists whose status is somewhere between Radiohead and God." Hehe, I wonder who :) They're so concerned about people hacking onto their PCs that they both have different machines for separate computers for accessing the Internet compared to the ones they compose on. :) About the new EP, going on to talk about the forthcoming album - "There's sort of running theme of melancholy to it, but it's true, it's not a great leap from 'Music Has The Right..' The nearest clue to where we're going is on the title track. But a lot of it will be even more outlandish than that. If you could call the last album electronica, you definitely couldn't call the new album that.." (Mike) "We've split and gone in two directions. There are some things that are just acoustic instruments playing acoustic music, while we've also done some even more electronic tracks." (Marcus) They've done music to adverts for Telecom Italia (with Leonardo Di Caprio) and Nissan, both Chris Cunningham-produced. "Now we know that we're supposed to be doing really psychedelic, organic-sounding music. I think to some extent we've pandered to the electronic scene previously, putting elements in that we're not necessarily into". (Mike) Finally, there's a big list of things BoC like and things they don't like. Edited highlights: Things Boards Of Canada like: "The wobble you get on an off-centre record. Devo, Twins Cocteau and Aphex, Nitzer Ebb, the Incredible String Band, Wu-Tang Clan, 'Geno' by Dexy's Midnight Runners'" Things Boards Of Canada don't like: "Electronic gadgets that don't work - 'it makes me sad to see things that have been thrown away. I'll pick it up and take it back home and try to make it work (Marcus)', Napster - 'it's not the big rich artists that'll suffer, it's the smaller artists. why should people buy their records when they can downoad them for free?'(Marcus)" Anyhow, i found it pretty interesting. Hope you dig, please buy Jockey Slut if you can find it to thank them for the excellent coverage ;) regards, h0l.
