I guess it came down to hearing little bits of the kid606 catalog that
were just kind of noisy and annoying, or maybe it's because i've been avoiding
buying records I can't DJ with, but I'm coming late to the kid606 party.
Then I was talking to him and Cex about playing here and thought I should
do my homework, and bought "PS I Love You" and the "GQ on the EQ." I think
both of those disks are definitely all that. PS I love you has more dubby
moments, and GQ his more batshit noisy moments, but they're both part of
a really idiosyncratic worldview made audible that can mess up your head.
For all his reputation as an annoying jokester, he also comes up with tracks
like "Strum" (on PS) which makes a huge nod towards Steve Reich, in all the
right ways. It's absolutely lush beautiful piece of music that dances right
on the edge between the utterly synthetic and the organic.
Under all that bit decimation and time stretch abuse beats the heart of a
romantic. I guess that's a case of 'P.S. I love you' being both more and
less than an ironic title...
And if any of you checked my track 010101 on mp3.com/chaircrusher -- yes,
I had the kid in mind. So sue me.
