i don't know if that's true - although I've long since stopped partying - when i did there was always the SPAZ crew as well as Jonah Sharp and Ambient Temple of Imagination. Most parties and raves back in the day had an ambient or chill-out room and I remember that when the "downtempo" sound came out it was basically Ninja Tune and Funci Porcini, Portishead etc. Everyone in SF was very into it and all seemed to know what it was. I've actually never heard anyone refer to ambient as downtempo out here.
