<<There sure are a lot of "idiots" who like the music of "idiot" marilyn
manson who makes pretty well produced gothic industrial music for an
"idiot.">>
As one of said "idiots," I have to stand behind this eloquent statement.
Marlyin Manson (Lord strike me down for muttering that name on this list) is
a pretty decent band. It's extremely well-produced and very self-aware glam
pop (I don't think they have any pretense of being "industrial"). I mean,
you'd expect them to be crap considering they're basically a huge publicity
stunt, but their music is actually very solid. When I got "Mechanical
Animals" that was my most-played album for a month. Unlike 99% of
monotonous WaxTrax/Cleopatra-type garbage that's floating around in that
"scene," Marylin Manson is quite creative, although no one will admit
because it's in the Top 40. Amazingly, they can even get rock ballads right
(e.g. "Speed of Pain"). I would compare them to Aphex Twin (oh man, I'm
asking for it now). They've been around awhile, become super-famous and
tried a lot of different things, but all the while they've never been afraid
to poke fun at themselves and their "scene." In fact that's pretty much all
Marylin Manson does; I see them as a big show put on just to make fun of
rock'n roll stardom and the silly youthful "angst" of industrial rock. And
in the process of making fun of the scene, they successfully work within the
scene and make some delightful, fun dancefloor type rock. I loved all the
chorus effects/octave pedals they use nowadays to make it sound like the
whole band is singing along all the time, not to mention all the
R&B/church-chorus style divas in the background...
I saw Marylin Manson open for Nine Inch Nails about 8 years ago before
Marylin Manson was really known (at least to me) and I thought they were
crap. This is glam pop shit that's just doing whatever it can to be "out
there," this isn't serious music! It took me years to figure out that it's
not supposed to be. I've come around (although I've given up being cool in
the process).
As for Nine Inch Nails mimicking Ministry, I'm not even going to go there.
I apologize for the topic of this email, but I did mention Aphex Twin in
there! Over.
