oh, you kids and your radical viewpoints. i feel like the idm list has dissipated to 'who can have the most offensive opinion' followed by a pretense of deterring flames. afx/ae are certainly NOT the only people doing anything new in idm (for christ's sakes, pole, boc, feq have all put out things in the last two years that changed the way i listen to music), NOR have they 'never changed their formula'. to dip into another argument, 'windowlicker' is an excellent track, very ornate and quirky and yet funky, demonstrating that mr. james' mastery of timbres has never been greater. and ae is not quite just the 'same old', and i'm sure that you recognize this, despite your sensationalist concept of music today. in any case, as the genre is growing more firmly established, it must begin to grow *inward*, rather than *outward*. that is to say, nobody is shocked by such-and-such bpm or such amount of noise anymore ; the only place to go is towards more precise control over the textures of sounds, more variation in the beats (idm has always been good about this one), more thought towards song structure, and so forth. i know the inner simon reynolds in us will say, 'to hell with musicianship i want shit to be CRAZY' but that can only go so far, really. well. i hope some of you recognize my name--i'm back after seven months off the list, and am glad to see that nothing has changed ; we're still bickering about the genius of aphex and what constitutes 'selling out', as it relates to aphex, why dance music is inherently inferior to more mature forms of music, and perhaps autechre, and, oh, the rest of the genre here and there, but mostly to what extent they are influenced by aphex. jolly good ! .af. ps; i make moooooooosic http://www.zenda.com/af/music.html pps; look out for a radioshow this january called 'electroacousticadillacmusic', if all goes well. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
