i feel like a maroon responding to myself, but i wanted to clarify before
the BOC flames roll in :D
i feel "amo bishop roden" is the "ok" song. everything else is really
really good :D
i suppose i'll post a quick review to make up for being a maroon.
"kid for today"
using some older "boc" drones (think "smokes quantity" although a little
happier), and a rhythm that gradually develops, "kid for today" presents is
probably the most characteristic boards of canada song on the EP. a very
dreamy melody floats in and out, with that wonderful nostalgic melancholy
flavor that boards of canada is known for. to me, this is the best song on
the EP.
"amo bishop roden"
this is the song with the bassy "moog hits" that someone on the list
previously mentioned. i personally find this to be the weakest song on the
EP, but probably because of the thin-sounding "strings" (although they're
definitely pads) used throughout the song and that provide most of the
melody. nothing really reached out and grabbed me about this song, but it
probably suffers being directly after "kid for today" and before "in a
beautiful place out in the country"

the much spoken-about vocoded song on the EP, this is the song sampled for
the flash animation put out by warp earlier this year. definitely a "new
style" for boards of canada, both the drum programming and the use of a
vocoder are different from previous work. luckily the melodic style is
similar, and the vocoding does great things for this song. i personally
found the drum programming sort of, uhh, not very interesting, since it
sounds more like background than the normally prominent rhythms boards of
canada usually use, but it doesn't detract by any means. overall a very
nice and refreshingly new boards of canada track.
"zoetrope"
using the cyclical nature of its namesake (those small tube things that you
put strips of paper in, spin, and look through the slits on the side for a
sort of "looping animation"), "zoetrope" is a highly melodic, mostly
looping piece. quite basic and simple, yet masterfully put together to
remain interesting, "zoetrope" is a good song to end the EP on. although
some people might refer to this one as "the boring one," i personally find
it nicely ambient and calming, and nice just to kick back to after the
other, more rhythmic songs on the EP.
