but, despite this probably being more information than you, or i, probably
need, it comes to the same conclusion that i was looking for. the original
Fraunhofer encoding is inferior to the freeware/gnu LAME encoder.

i use cdex myself, but mainly for cd -> wav so i can't say for certain
whether its any good, but it may be worth a try.
