i wonder how many people have become aware of idm

I'm part of that. I'm just to young to have missed the E. Neubauten/
Throbbing Gristle/ Nurse with Wound movement, but Ministry's "The Mind is a
Terrible Thing to Taste" started it all for me. Then came NIN, and Skinny
Puppy (who are still my favorite all time).
Sometime in the late 80's/early 90's, though is when it all fell apart
because many of these bands turned to guitars. Front Line Assembly, who was
decent at first, went metal with Millineum and never came back, and we all
know how much of a joke Ministry is these days.
My first exposue to IDM was Tri-Repetae and Phoenecia's "Randa Roomet."
The only thing I would recommend to people on this list from those days is
Haujobb's "Freeze Frame Reality" or "Solutions for a Small Planet." After
those, they sorta went trip hop/down tempo so if you like that sorta thing,
check out their "Remixes 99" cd.
