Right, that's exactly what he's been doing - mixing anywhere between 5 and 10 MD players, running MDs of tracks he's done before hand. I can't tell if by Ryan's scare-quotes he thinks that doesn't qualify as a performance, but in my opinion, it's worlds away from simply hitting the play button on a DAT. I've seen him do it three times now (once in Barcelona, twice in SF) and every time it's been totally compelling, unpredictable, musical as fuck, funky, not to mention risky - there are times when it verges on collapsing, and he pulls it back. I think people forget how important the aspect of risk is in live performance. In my opinion, what Friedmann is doing isn't at all "performing" - it's performing, playing, rocking out, and doing it masterfully. (apologies, Ryan, if i misread your quotation marks...) -phil --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
