I DON'T think just because someone uses a certain effect (or chopping something to pieces), that they are copying Autechre. Maybe if they do Autechre type everything ...well then hell yeah they are jumping on Autechre's sound. I had a friend that was talking about all these Black Sabbath rip off bands. And I was like what NO WAY man, NO ONE has copied their style, it's just a coincidence. Just because a bands guitars are tuned in the same way and the riffs & chrods are in the same manner...does not mean they are trying to sound like Black Sabbath at all.

Why? Some artists have a distinct style (before all the copycats jumped in)? If I hear a tune and it sounds totally like something Autechre would do, what would I call that? Autechre-esque, carbon copy, ?

Well I would suppose Autechre are different in that they had a unique sound for a while.

And humans like apes have been known to mimic things. Just cause we have the same basic internal design doesn't mean we are all the same. There are innovators and then there are a TON of followers. Obviously, we all take in some of the same influences musically. That's very cool, but instead of doing it in the exact same style as someone else, try bringing something else out.

Or any other instrument

I don't know how they are going to be the future if they have always been around. Their releases are consistently exceptional,
