as with most new music it's all a matter of equilibrium. Microscopic sounds are starting to make the transition from a new trend to a more established subgenre. While it will retain to some extent its own niche audience (one which developed quite rapidly, from my own observation) it will inevitably begin to become assimilated into the larger scheme of things musically, a phenomenon which is nothing new and is not limited to electronic music. It seems like a lot of the more extreme minimal stuff out there is pushing it almost to its limits, and it will be interesting to see where it goes. I think the "pendulum" so to speak is going to start coming back toward more musicality, though, if the last few years of the same back and forth pattern are any indication. Microscopic stuff, some of it is great, there seems to be some rather average stuff as well as is the case with any new music trend. I really like the majority of the Mille Plateaux stuff I've heard, and the 12K comp I picked up is good too..... but I still have to give highest praise to Oval's entire discography, since he did it first and, in my opinion, consistently does it better, if less extremely. Also, Panacea's "Brasilia" made some interesting combinations of his more hardcore d&b background along with microscopic sounds and harsh noise.... not entirely listenable, but some interesting sounds and ideas :-)
