It's marketing as long as it introduces of reinforces ideas about or
visability of a product. Now their product is attached to this character so
when you see him or someone who reminds you of him it also reminds you of
what its advertising. I think this is a very innovative way of advertising,
by first creating a hype behind something, then adding the product later you
can fold an add campaign before it is launched without suffering an
association with a terrible add.
