not at all, my dear, not at all. we can always put the ring back on. just let me finish pouring another two glasses of this left-over Olive Garden vino, while i put on some of this soft, soothing pansonic on the turntable... ;) it's interesting that, for all the moaning done when someone says a woman musician is beautiful, nobody ever thinks to realize that putting her picture on the cd cover is as much a marketing decision as anything. at least partially, there is a "sex sells" mentality going on, on the part of the label and artist. idm is primarly an audience of stomping, hooting, head-nodding male monkeys within an age range where the hormones flow like wine. why not take advantage of that to move a few more units? perhaps that's a bit too cynical... i don't particularly mind being manipulated just a bit (ms. parker is most def' beautiful) but i do feel uncomfortable when someone berates me for enjoying someone's appearance or claims that it is sexist to think someone attractive. on the other hand, when you evaluate a woman's art on the basis of her looks, that's not right, either. damn, these sexual politics suck.

oddly, of the male crickets that sing to attract mates, some choose not to sing, but rather hang out in the general location of other singing crickets, so as to fool females into mating. there are a variety of strategies that have evolved that have little to do with actual physical attractiveness... as a purely scientific experiment, i myself have tried playing other male monkey's music to ensnare the ladies, particularly of the heavy bass variety that pumps from the speakers in my tricked-out honda hatchback. no luck, so far, though i was handed a citation and a lecture from a cop for disturbing the peace. i suspect he was really just upset that i was playing lexanculpt and kid606 remixes of NWA classics. i'll definitely report back to idm-l as soon as anything happens, though. -a.
