I've had my fill of hyperactive drum'n'bass with Bogdan Raczynski's
output on RePHLeX (which I do like in a very perverse way, although I'm
not too much of a drum'n'bass fan), so after Ovuca's Lactavent album
hist new EP, King Stacey was a bit of a disappointment at first. Then, I
did what I usually do an tried it at 33 1/3 RPM. I was totally blown away,
at least with Stacey and Eustace. Both are beautiful tracks when played at
wrong speed, nice crunchy and dirty rhythms, exquisite string layers and
the vocal samples - excellent. I picked up the record quite a while back
and didn't give it much though after listening to it at 45 RPM. Today, I
was going through my new but neglected pile, and decided to give King
Stacey another chance. I was, as you can see above, pleasantly
surprised. The tracks (well, Stacey and Eustace) mix well with Gescom,
Autechre, Beta Bodega, Speedy J (especially Public Energy Number 1) and
Markant releases, why not with others as well (I tried just the above, I
will experiment more later).
If someone else has been disappointed with King Stacey, I'd suggest you
slow it down and give it another chance. Yes, it sort of defeats the
original idea of the tracks, but I like them that way better.
I have procured all the recent RePHLeX output, and I have to say that
I'm generally quite disappointed. Like A Tim's Red and Blue Boxing needs
a lot of work to become at least tolerable, and Bogdan - well, he's
Bogdan. But I like Thinking of You the most out of the three albums and
one EP of his on RePHLeX.
I'm waiting anxiously to get my copy of Ensemble's Sketch Proposals and
the forthcoming Slipper, Ovuca and PP Roy albums - and hoping that RePHLeX
would become the exceptionally great label it once was (or then I should
get a sense of humour particular to Braindance).

Live and Die 7" (RePHLeX CYLOB1) up for sale, please contact me. I have
the CD but would like to have the 7" version instead (or as well). It's
sometimes very hard being a completist - I spent a few months hunting down
Blueprint, Surface and Meta back catalogues but finally prevailed...
Oh, one more thing: I was able to find the first Stasis/Nuron split EP
on Likemind (LM01) as well, completing my Likemind collection (thanks
Jamie). Though they date back to 1993, the tracks have not aged one bit,
making the record a real gem. Especially Stasis's Artifax is one of the
best IDM (emphasis on D) tracks I've ever heard. And at nearly 8 minutes,
it is long enough for extended enjoyment.
