That post has some points but basically goes after idm - type fans as
a strawman. I can make fun of 'em too, but it doesn't have anything to
do with actual people. I've gotten into disputes on IDM where I'm duelling
from the viewpoint of eclectic tastes versus people for whom it's the
one true faith.
Whatever. As soon as events on the internet loom larger in your self-image
and emotional well being than your real life, it's time to shoot the
computer.
Conversely, I'd defend the viewpoint that there is something musically
valid and unique to what has come to be called 'IDM' and it's not about
elitism, at least for me. I don't see any distinction between the validity
of a really well made house track, and aphex twin's latest clatter and
screech prank.
I realy like actual dancing, and actual dance music. IDM is kind of
the crossroads between pop and full on experimental music, so it's exciting
to watch the crosspollination...insulting a whole class of people is just
garden variety stupidity...
By the way the VLAD on Warp is a really cool bit of work. He seems to
have a new take on the Rich Devine/Kit Clayton digital tomfoolery. And
there's at least one track I can drop into my dub techno sets to frighten
the citizens...
