I'm extremely impressed with "Supermodified" too. I've been a fan of his
since pre-Bricolage, love Cujo - Adventures in Foam and all the rest,
and whilst I think he's always been pretty advanced in his use of
samples and beats, I just think the new album is an amazing leap
forward. Someone else's review said it's "Permutation Part 2" which I
think is very far from the truth.
I'm a big fan of chopped-up drum'n'bass, one of the few people who still
thinks there's life in drill'n'bass and all the rest... the new album
has a fair amount _less_ actually of the drum'n'bass type beats (not
that they're entirely absent or anything!), so it's testament to how
good it is that I'm not at all disappointed. The beats are more varied
than his have been in the past, and still endlessly interesting -
there's lots of detail even in the tracks without speeded up beats. And
the use of samples is really quite masterful. More variety of sounds
than before, and yet they're somehow put together into tracks that are
really coherent wholes.
I would think that anyone who's liked Amon's work in the past or who's
been into Hrvatski recently, or the Ninja Tune sound, will really enjoy
Supermodified. Strongly recommended from this guy anyway.
Cheers,
Peter.
