oh my. how incredibly profound! instead of intelligent dance music, it's individual dance music. and we can keep the silly acronym too. hmm.. that sounded sarcastic. actually i think it's a rather good idea. it's not really something you play at a club for everyone, but it's definitely something that people listen to more when they're by themselves. and the dancing thing is more true, because as was discussed here quite a while ago, someone dancing at a club is likely feeling the music in a similar but markedly different way from someone who's dancing to it sitting at home typing away (ahem.. hehe). the music is also made by individuals based on individual taste, and [usually] is made for other individuals to listen to (as opposed to mindless clones at a "rave" or "club" (no offense to the ravers and clubbers on the list). other topic: all the mp3 stuff is interesting, i'm sure, but it sounds like all of the people arguing on this list are under the impression that people like ninja tune are the same size as labels like warner, atlantic, etc. from experience, i've never been able to find good idm (in reference to my reappropriated labelling above (hehe)) on these free-for-all sites. i have gotten mp3's from friends, but that's not much different than having them lend you the cd or making a tape of it. i've found aphex twin on napster and like oth.net (which never works anyways), but i mean, who *doesn't* have come to daddy? if the superstructure of the recording industry changes from mp3's, the big labels will lose out because their entire system is based on controlling "fads" and "trends". the seattle "grunge" thing was already full blown in seattle long before the industry got ahold of it, and they killed it (imo). people like metallica and dr. dre write music about destroying the system because it gets them more publicity, but they're all perfectly fine getting a check from the system. people like ninjatune, skam, pitchcadet, etc., pretty much avoid the system. i mean, geez, in amon tobin's new cd he thanks the montreal ninja crew and the people subscribed to this list. amon tobin isn't making the amount of money as metallica is, and hence, since less people are even aware of amon tobin's existence, fewer people are buying the cd's, and it's getting posted as mp3's in much fewer quantities. it would be rather absurd, in a pop-culture viewpoint, if there were headlines all over saying "Ninjatune Fights Napster! Amon Tobin Cancels Remainder Of US Tour!". time for a generalization: most people who enjoy listening to metallica, or dr. dre, or similar (there are tons), don't really care about the music. they just like getting mad or angry or bopping/banging their head to something. most people who enjoy autechre are surprisingly proud of the autechre they own. there's a difference... hmm.. i wonder why... =) -derek due to bandwidth stipulations, no signature has been provided. --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
