So the new audio formats (DVD-Audio and Super CD Audio, see
http://www.nytimes.com/library/tech/99/12/circuits/articles/09down.html for
details) are filtering in, although I'm not sure how many titles are offered
yet. These formats pack a lot more bits onto the disc, and supposedly offer
much better quality. If the sound is as good as reported, should be cool.
On the horizon, apparently, is multichannel (as opposed to just stereo)
sound.
So are software-based artists going to have to upgrade their programs to
something that will produce sound at a better sampling rate? What about
people wedded to Cubase on their Atari ST? Is anyone going to use
multichannel sound effectively?
Prediction: a brief spike in multichannel psychedelia soon after the new
format(s) become common, until the stoners get bored with panning...
