Did anyone pick up on the Ultravox question? Ultravox was my favorite band when I was in my late teens and early twenties, when I was a sucker for their over-the-top romantic synth pop (ah, sweet youth . . . ). At the time the 80s version of the band was the better one for me, with Midge Ure's Eurotrash croon more hip than John Foxx's punkish snarl. Now, looking back, it is the John Foxx version of the band that holds up better, and the song "I want to be a machine" a staple in my ambient DJ sets. The Midge Ure-era Ultravox, except for _Vienna_ and _Rage in Eden_, hasn't aged well. I wonder if any of the current ambient/IDM artists might admit to being influenced (one way or another) by Ultravox . . . A discography (minus the avalanche of singles and b sides and "best of" collections) that I can list off the top of my head: Ultravox! (produced by Brian Eno) (late 1970s) Ha Ha Ha! Systems of Romance Vienna (exit John Foxx, enter Midge Ure) Rage in Eden New Europeans (Japanese import) Quartet Monument (live) Lament I stopped listening to them after _Lament_, but apparently they floundered around, put out a couple more albums and singles. A site (http://www.ultravox.org.uk) with links to probably more Ultravox sites and discographies than anyone will ever need. Yikes. Now, against my better judgement, I will have to go and dig out all those albums and countless singles (my thankfully brief flirtation with collecting) and have a listen. G. P.S. Thanks to everyone who pitched in on the minimal pulse Brinkmann question a while back. np: Everything But The Girl _Temperamental_ --------------------------------------------------------------------- To unsubscribe, e-mail: idm-unsubscribe@hyperreal.org For additional commands, e-mail: idm-help@hyperreal.org
