Romanticism was the artistic period lasting roughly from the French
Revolution to Wagner's death, somewhat birthed to a reaction against the
logical bent of the classicists toward an organic positivity. If
romanticism had a lot to do with this thread, we might be reading about a
range of affects (beyond "top10 makes-me-cry trackz") from a spectrum of
musics, but everyone seems to be stuck on "I still listen to <some lyrical
artist> sometimes." People miss the familiar melodies, words, and sounds
of pop-oriented music while listening to more abstract and electronic
music, which causes a sense of isolation from their history. Mends to this
disconnection cannot just "come from anywhere," but they certainly can
come from music that doesn't bear an obvious connection to one's
experiences. That is, the past isn't the only path to your history.
