Just have to jump in here regarding Cubase, MIDI timing, Mac/Win, and
whatnot...
a. MIDI timing tests on LogicAudio were comparable on Mac and PC. The
Atari is tighter for several reasons. Reports from users indicate MIDI
timing and audio/MIDI sync with Cubase (on Mac or Win) are not as good as
Logic. You can blame the OS in part, but also the app.
b. Development of both Logic and Cubase are a little ahead on Mac. The
next version of Logic for Windows is rewritten from the ground up to
provide complete parity with the Mac version. Logic 4.0 will use the
32-bit timer, so it can be a fully 32-bit app. The 32-bit timer on Win98
is far superior to the 32-bit timer on Win95, enough so that Logic 4.0
will require Win98. Apparently the 32-bit timer on Win95 is so bad it
could cause up to 500ms without any MIDI. Nobody seems to be sure whether
Win98's 32-bit timer allows tighter MIDI than Win95's 16-bit timer.
c. Latency and slop in MIDI devices themselves is an important issue.
d. The MIDI features of DirectX can provide tighter MIDI timing, but I
am not aware of any program that uses those facilities yet.
