The following is about production. ]]I'm not quite sure how one would would control their sampler with just a dr550, and no computer/sequencing program, but it's probably possible. anyone care to explain how to do it?[[ The dr has MIDI out. Hook this up to your sampler. Program the patterns/songs on the dr. Make sure that the sampler (he used an early AKAI) that is hooked up to the dr has the appropriate samples you want corosponding to each pad on the dr (the dr has pads that you touch to trigger MIDI on signals). Press play on the dr. it's as easy as that. What's not easy is to get the whole thing to play above 200 bpm (I don't thing he went this fast until later). Also there is no control over the MIDI controllers (ie filtering) so all those filter sweeps must have been done post-sequenceing or on the fly manually. How he programmed the melodies with the dr is beyond me, because the dr only sends MIDI on messages, not MIDI off(which mark the end of a note). Meaning there is no duration of notes; just on. AND changing the pitch is tricky too. the dr allows you to assign a pitch to each sample/pad, but you can't just tell it to play this pad at say, d-3, then a-2. If he used the dr for the ! melodies (I don't think he ever said he did) he would have had to have created a sample for every note pitch/duration combination that he uses. Talk about tedious. Hope that covers it. If you want to know more (eg how to program a pattern on teh dr) let me know.
